Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend  Next Entry
So. Looks I'm not going to school this year. I got accepted in university as an honor student. I finished my B.A two years ago, but wanted to do my Honors in art history, because it seems I need it to do my masters. So I moved to London, On. and got accepted at Western University. I was super excited. I haven't been to school in two years and their art program is 10 times better than the one at my old university.
It fit perfectly with SleepyBear's plans as well since he's taking a year off and then applying for his Masters for next year.
So my plan was to do my Honors degree this year (I could get some classes credited and was easily able to fit everything into two semesters).
But then I met a counselor to make sure everything was fine and she told me that they have this thing called residency credits where I have to do a certain amount of credits for my honors to be accepted since I did my previous degree at another university. How long would that take me?
Twp years. Two, fucking, years.
So basically what they want me to do is do all the classes I need in one year and then pay for another year of random classes, so that they can give me my degree that I successfully completed the year before.
Now that wouldn't be so bad, one can say, if niversity wasn't so DAMN EXPENSIVE.
Also that would also imply that I would, again, be in a long distance relationship for a year and I just came out of a very long year being apart from my boyfriend.
If this was my Master's, with a specific program and specific professor, I would do it. Where and with whom you do your Master's is super important. But I'm really just looking for some extra art history class here.

So I'm not doing it. I guess I'll just work for another year. Again.
I'll register at whatever university SleepyBear is going for his Master's. Most university offer decent art history classes. If they want me to do it in two years than at least those two years will coincide with his two years Master's Degree. Than I'll be able to start mine.
I'm just really frustrated about the whole thing because I was really looking forward to going back to school after two years being away. And frustrated because the whole thing seems to be set up to suck me dry of all my money. Really.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. It somehow had to come out.
(Plus you know I still have to find a job so....money is a lot on my mind these days).

On the good news, I am looking to liquidate most of the prints I have in my shop soon, so I can replace them with new things (more about my collages and drawings), so there will be a super sale (5$) launch soon in my etsy shop. Yeah!
More on that later.

I was afraid of that. :( Transferring universities is a nightmare, even if you've already got a degree under your belt.

I'd do the same thing. Western's a great school but you've paid your dues! It's be great to have it come from a school like that but an undergrad is an undergrad. My friends all learned that the hard way after killing themselves to get into universities like that and realized it was always worth it. They could pursue the Masters' they wanted no matter where they came from.

Sorry, was NOT always worth it. ;) I mean, I won't lie, I chose Queen's because of the name. It turned out well fortunately but if I could do it all again knowing what I do now, I wouldn't fret about the institution.

yes , I agree.
The only thing is I went to a very small, liberal university where the range of classes was very limited. So I was actually very excited about the range of topic ad classes offered at Western. But at the same time ANY Canadian university is bigger than the one I went to, so I guess any university will do. James want to apply to either Montreal (McGill, and I could go to Concordia), an university in Halifax or one in Toronto. So I think it's a fair guess that I will be able to apply to universities that will give me decent art history classes.
I think we are lucky that in Canada, up until the Master's at least, for most of the undergrad degrees, it really doesn't matter which university you attended.
I'm glad to know, though, that some people experienced something similar and found that it really was worth it in the end ( the big name and all that jazz).

Wow, even King's or StFx?
Oh yes, my Mum did her honours in art history at UofT. :D She loved it to pieces. If it were me I'd be pushing for the east coast but...that's my crush of the moment, lol.
We are most certainly lucky, I agree. :)

I kinda want to go the Halifax as well. I just love the Maritimes. The teacher he wants to work with the most is at McGill, though. I don't really want to live in Montreal again, although I would be close to my family and friends again so that is a good thing.
But I would LOVE to live in Nova Scotia. I've never been there, but I just know I would love it. My mom's been to Halifax and she said it's her favorite Canadian city so far, and she and I have pretty much the same tastes so...
I still want him to study with the teacher he prefers, but I am crossing m fingers for Halifax :)

University is so expensive, even here in Australia which has government support for it. Taking the course at the same time as your boyfriend sounds like it would make you much happier though :) good luck with whatever you decide!

Oh thank you!
University in Quebec is where it is the least expensive in Canada and I still thought it was too much!
Now that I am in Ontario, it seems to me even more silly to pay for a year that would not amount to anything (by my personal culture that is). I love studying and learning, but I am not rich!

I've never worried about money as much as I
have since going to university! I'm doing my Masters now.
The position you're in sounds really frustrating because it's
good to go back to school in you're in the mood for learning. My
drive for studying can come & go so if I had a year out after high
school like some of my friends I would never have went to university!

On the bright side though, you can go back to uni with your boyfriend
and not have the stress of a long distance relationship. Because, although
that shouldn't affect your decision in the end, it's always better to spend
as much time as you can with the person you love. :)

Oh sweetie! That is terrible!! Why didn't they tell you that earlier? It's so unfair :(
But what about Memorial Univeristy? Did you already resigned (I received a letter telling me the calendar was out AND the letter that they cancelled my application, because I asked them)? I guess it wouldn't be too late, is it?
Beside, if you come back to Mtl, you'll get plenty of University to chose from (like 4), including Udm (Sciences de l'Information (ok, I'm preaching for my own school!), where you could probably get accepted, even with your B.A from Bishop's :)

Oh, well, take care, I miss you!
xoxoxo

Oh yes I agree.
I was really excited about going back to school. I LOVE school.
It's just I am getting poorer and poorer by the minute and actually another year off might just be good to pay off some debts before stacking up some more :)

Long distance relationship are a PAIN.
I don't think it would have affected my decision, though, if I had dome my Master's. But just for some additional classes that are offered in almost every decent sized university? It hardly seems worth the hassle.
Plus I will be happier :)
